It is estimated 1 in every 4 cats in North America is overweight. Overweight cats carry a higher risk for health conditions, such as osteoarthritis, heart disorders, diabetes and respiratory problems that can result in less day-to-day comfort and a shorter life expectancy. To determine if your cat is overweight, consult your veterinarian and check your cat periodically. You should be able to feel the ribs. In short-haired cats you should also see an abdominal tuck between the ribs and hips. Overweight cats tend to carry their excess fat under the stomach and chest. If you cannot feel the ribs, your cat is probably overweight. Consider a healthy, moderated feeding program, such as Performatrin Ultra® Healthy Weight with Salmon Recipe, to help your overweight cat.

Step 1: Introduce

Mix ¼ part of Performatrin Ultra® Healthy Weight with Salmon Recipe with ¾ parts of your cat’s current food for 2-3 days. Gradually increase the proportion of Performatrin Ultra® Healthy Weight Salmon and Brown Rice Recipe during the next 5-10 days, while decreasing the amount of old food until you are exclusively feeding this formula.

Step 2: Reduce Intake

Performatrin Ultra® Healthy Weight with Salmon Recipe is specially formulated to satisfy cats’ appetites faster, so that your cat is wanting (and eating) less food. Start by determining how much your cat is currently eating by either weighing or counting the number of portions of food fed daily. The accompanying Feeding Guide indicates the typical amount of this food required to maintain the indicated ideal weight. Your cat’s target weight loss goal is to lose 2% of body weight (but not more that 5%) in a 2-week period. For example, a 16-lb (7.3-kg) cat should lose 1/3 lb (0.15 kg) in 2 weeks. To reach this target, reduce the amount of food currently fed by approximately 10% and maintain feeding that amount for a 2-week period. For example, if you have been feeding 100 grams (3.5 oz.) a day, reduce it to about 90 grams (3.2 oz.). Continue to reduce your cat’s food intake by a further 10% every 2 weeks until ideal target weight loss is achieved. It may take 6-10 months to reach your cat’s ideal weight. †

†Based on the cat being 25% to 30% overweight.

Step 3: Measure Success

Maintain a weight loss chart to monitor progress. Ideally, weigh your cat on a scale every 2 weeks. Slow, sustainable weight loss is best for achieving permanent results.

Step 4: Maintain Success

Once your cat’s target weight has been achieved, increase the amount of Performatrin Ultra® Healthy Weight with Salmon Recipe fed by 10% every 2 weeks until desired weight is maintained. For long-term weight maintenance, adjust feeding according to your cat’s individual needs.

Supplementary Treats: If you are giving treats, use in moderation and select low fat, healthy choices.

Exercise: To help increase your cat’s metabolism, increase the amount of play time.

Provide fresh, clean drinking water and ensure it is available at all times. Maintain a schedule of regular veterinary check-ups. Store Performatrin Ultra® Healthy Weight with Salmon Recipe in a cool, dry place.
